  • Saudi Arabia Allows Women to Contest Local Elections

    Saudi Arabia allowed women to stand in local elections on Sunday. In a country where women face a host of restrictions including a driving ban, the move was welcomed as an important step forward. But it also faced criticism from hardline conservatives and from rights groups who said it does not go far enough in providing women with equal rights.

Driving in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia is an adventure every time. This is just a short sample of driving on some of the the back streets in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. If you are not familiar with the driving styles of the middle east then It is wise to leave the driving to some one else. If your want to practice western style defensive driving you will cause accidents because no one will be expecting you to drive in a courteous way. You will be doing polite things and they will not expect it and wreck into you. I found this out nearly the hard way when I first started driving here. I pulled up to an intersection out away from the city and stopped at the stop sign. I was nearly rear ended by a local that was totally and completely surprised by my stopping at the stop sign. Fortunately he swerved out and ran through the intersection without hitting me. But he let me know he was not happy with my technique. It is the practice to proceed without stopping when the intersection is clear regardless of what the traffic sign or signal says to do. So I learned to adapt my driving style so fit the local ways. It is a bit tough because when I go back home to the USA my driving habits take a couple of days to get fully back to the USA driving style.

If Six Flags' 16 American theme parks seem a little too local, you could soon be riding one of its roller coasters in Saudi ArabiaThe company's CEO told Saudi-owned Al Arabiya on Monday the amusement park plans to expand its empire in the Arab nation, following a meeting with the country's deputy crown prince.  Few of the details have been released, but Six Flags' CEO did say his company's expansion fits in with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 –– an economic blueprint for the kingdom to stop relying on oil and expand into other industries.   Six Flags has already announced it's going to open a park in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia's neighbor, in 2019.  The Abu Dhabi location promises to feature record-breaking roller coasters, but both the UAE and Saudi Arabia are more conservative than the U.S., so it'll be interesting to see if their parks' attractions differ from those at the American locations.   Six Flags may help Saudi Arabia's entertainment industry attract both local and foreign crowds. The country has little in the way of amusement parks, and last year it was reported most Saudi families favor traveling abroad.  Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia's goal is to attract almost 82 million tourists a year by 2020.  This video includes clips from Six Flags, CBSBBC and CCTV, and images from Getty Images.  Newsy is your source for concise, unbiased video news and analysis covering the top stories from around the world.
